Fish Out of Fresh Water

By exploring the act of combining functional ceramic pieces and activism I aim to facilitate a conversation around topics of climate change and its effects on the greater Cincinnati area that are often overlooked and pushed aside. According to Louisville Public Media, researchers in Kentucky’s Energy and Environment Cabinet found chemicals linked to cancers within the tissue of every fish they tested. Fish Out of Fresh Water is inspired by the phrase “We will table this for later…” often muttered by those in charge of addressing these problems. I have created a tabletop installation discussing the pollution of the Ohio river and habitat destruction forcing the viewer to actively think about the effects of pollution and to start a conversation about what to do next. Each of the textures on the pieces within the series is directly inspired by the current state of the Ohio river and other natural habitats around it.
